Hark! 2011
December 20
Silent Night, Holy Night
Performed by Greg Barlow on banjo and mandolin
Words: Joseph Mohr, 1818; trans. John Freeman Young, 1863
Music: STILLE NACHT, Franz Xaver Gruber, 1818
Honestly, Silent Night is not my favorite hymn. But for many people, it is an irreplaceable part of the Christmas season. Plus, it was kind of a shame that it had only been recorded once in the four years of Hark.
Lyrics
Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright,
Round yon virgin mother and child!
Holy Infant, so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing: "Alleluia;
Christ the Saviour is born,
Christ the Saviour is born."
Silent night, holy night!
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth,
Silent night, holy night!
Wondrous star, lend thy light;
With the angels let us sing,
Alleluia to our King;
Christ the Saviour is born,
Christ the Saviour is born.
